Cytogenetic Technologist I - Marlborough, MA - Tuesday - Saturday - 8:30AM-5:00PM (Some flexibility in this schedule)

The Quest Marlborough Cytogenetics Laboratory is a full-service, state of the art laboratory equipped with automation including AI karyotyping. Quest Marlborough is also affiliated with UMass Memorial Medical Center and as such, has an academic/teaching component.

The successful candidate for this position will be responsible for efficient and accurate performance of high complexity cytogenetic laboratory processes and will be involved in many aspects of the Cytogenetics laboratory including tissue culture, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and chromosome analysis of all tissue types. If interested, the selected applicant may have the opportunity to be involved in other aspects of the Laboratory, including genomic microarray processing and analysis.

This position is in a clinical laboratory focused on patient care and requires the ability to perform complex laboratory testing according to established procedures in an accurate and reliable manner.

  • Reviewing submitted clinical data to allow appropriate pre-analytic triage of all specimens.
  • Performing assigned tissue culture and wet lab duties for all specimen types (prenatal, products of conception, peripheral blood, bone marrow and solid tumor), harvesting cultures, and preparing slides for microscopic analysis; assisting with troubleshooting workflows or equipment; assisting with maintaining supplies and reagent preparation.
  • Microscopy and karyotyping of G-banded chromosomes.
  • FISH: Performing all aspects of specimen processing including hybridization of multiple specimen types, including fresh and fixed tissue, trouble-shooting hybridization, microscopic analysis, and validating of assays.
  • Ensuring accurate specimen processing and test results by strict adherence to testing methodology and quality standards.
  • Assisting the supervisor in validating new procedures to improve quality, efficiency, and/or accuracy.
  • Assisting with teaching rotating students, residents and fellows.
  • Maintaining a professional appearance at all times.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required WorkExperience:

One (1) year full-time experience in a clinicalCytogenetics laboratory.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • The normal performance of duties may require lifting and carrying objects: Objects 1 to 10 pounds are lifted and carried frequently; objects 11 to 25 pounds are lifted and carried occasionally; objects 36 to 50 pounds are seldom lifted or carried and objects over 50 pounds are not to be lifted or carried without assistance.
  • Microscopic analysis requires extended periods sitting at a microscope.
  • Tissue culture and wet lab areas require extended periods of standing, sitting at a biohazard hood, or pipetting.
  • FISH requires the ability to stand or sit for long periods possibly in a small darkroom environment.
  • Ability to stand and work at the bench for long periods of time.
  • Frequent walking and/or standing.
  • May be required to use a wide variety of manual and automated pipettes and laboratory instruments and apparatuses all of which demand significant manual dexterity.

Knowledge:

  • Sound theoretical and operational knowledge of job assignment(s) in Cytogenetics.
  • Knowledge of organizational/departmental policies and procedures.

Skills:

  • Requires manual dexterity and excellent pattern recognition skills.
  • Must be detail-oriented,have the ability towork independently, establish work priorities and to handle several tasks simultaneously for maximum department efficiency.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to deal courteously and effectively with supervisors,co-workersand clients.
  • Communication skills necessary to handle telephone inquiries from clients.
  • Ability to deal with client information in a confidential manner.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook) and Laboratory Information Systems.
