Ameren Transmission is dedicated to planning, constructing and safely operating over 8,000 transmission miles across a variety of energy markets. About The Position

The System Protection Engineer is responsible for protection engineering design and analysis, NERC Protective Relay & Control (PRC) reliability standard work and protection system performance content. The Transmission Protection Engineer designs control and protection systems, determined protective relay and surge protection requirements and determines the specification of relay settings for transmission and generation systems.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Design appropriate, cost effective protection schemes, review schematic drawings, perform power system calculations and coordination studies and other engineering studies as required.

  • Perform on going and special engineering studies for protective relaying and PRC standard compliance as required.

  • Develop Ameren programs to comply with assigned PRC standards, provide internal training and guidance for those standards and participate on or lead associated teams.

  • Analyze system outages for proper Protection System performance and initiate investigation of questionable protective system performance.

  • Support Transmission Operations outside of normal working hours on occasion, as needed.

  • Act as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for assigned PRC reliability standard(s). Represent Ameren in NERC audits of assigned PRC standards and possibly on industry committees, which requires some travel.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university required.

  • Power option preferred. Master of Science Degree preferred.

  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certification preferred.

  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) License or commitment to actively pursue one in Illinois and/or Missouri required.

  • Two or more years of experience with protective relaying design, Protection System maintenance, or technical equivalent preferred.

*Technical career path level depends up on applicant's credentials.

In addition to the above qualifications, the successful candidate will demonstrate:

Good analytical, project management, communications and human relations skills. Must be able to handle multiple assignments/projects and effectively prioritize. Computer proficiency and strong academic background in power system coursework. Familiarity with Ameren Transmission & generation system, schematic control diagrams, symmetrical components and/or protection devices preferred. Lead PRC related teams and work effectively as part of a project team.
