Job Overview

Serve as the adviser of the newsroom of The News Record, the student-run news organization at the University of Cincinnati.

This is a nine-month position (August - April) at approximately 8 to 12 hours per week.

Essential Functions
  • Provide support and training for The News Record newsroom. Act as a consultant and educator - but not a censor -- in all aspects of journalism.
  • Work with the students in the newsroom to increase their competence and understanding of news values; research, reporting and writing skills; photography and design skills; source identification; story selection; legal and ethical knowledge and other matters.
  • Provide regular feedback/critiques of student work and seek feedback/critiques of student work from journalism professionals.
  • Advise the newsroom on the development of policies and procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with the newsroom to ensure a sustained high-quality standard of journalism consistent with the standards of the Society of Professional Journalists/Sigma Delta Chi's Code of Ethics.
  • Serve as a professional liaison with the professional business manager of The News Record.
  • Be aware of journalism trends and the work of other college media. Share them with the students.
  • Work with editor-in-chief of The News Record to submit student work to college media contests.
  • Advise/coach editor-in-chief in expanding digital reach and social media focus of the student-run news organization.
  • Be available/respond to requests for counsel from editor-in-chief or other staff members.
  • Maintain consistent office hours during the week.
  • Respond to inquiries from faculty, students, public and outside media.
  • Participate as a member of the University of Cincinnati Communications Board.
  • Perform related duties based on the news organization's need.
Required Education
  • Bachelor's Degree in English Composition, Professional Writing, Creative Writing, or related field.
  • Seven (7) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.

Three (3) years of relevant experience to include reviewing and editing documents, articles, books, etc.
