JOB DESCRIPTION

The Research and Development (R&D) Engineer position designs and delivers new process components enabling increased efficiency and product performance of the fiber glass making process (Rotary Fiberizing) for the Insulation Solutions Business across North America and global platforms.

The primary role of the R&D Engineer is to lead the optimization of spinner design (fiberizer component), and partner with team members to enable step change performance in fiber diameter capability and spinner life through changes in mechanical design configurations. This includes partnering with metallurgy experts and various Science and Technology functions to deliver step change performance on spinner design, supporting safe, productive, and stable operations

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Working & Living Safely (10%)

  • Ensure rigorous compliance to safety procedures and OC corporate policies.
  • Focus on sustaining a safe work environment for self and coworkers.
  • Translate work safety knowledge to personal/home.

Fiberizer Design and Development (60%)

  • Develop a spinner design platform to achieve the desired fiber diameter, quality and length at a targeted glass pull rate for our building insulation and technical insulation products.
  • Develop new spinner designs and partner with metallurgy experts to safely increase spinner life and operating performance.
  • Lead new spinner drilling optimization process and partner with team members to enable step change performance in operation.
  • Partner with our Center of Excellence team to provide expertise and guidance in helping to solve manufacturing or product issues caused by the fiberizing process.

Project Leadership (25%)

  • Partner with fiberizing team on design, development and testing of new fiberizing concepts.
  • Plan and oversee lab scale and plant trials of new components and equipment.
  • Manage project information in VelOCity, our corporate stage-gate project management tool.
  • Work with Plant/Business Leaders to develop a working knowledge of the financial drivers for products and processes.

Protect OC Intellectual Property (5%)

  • File Invention Records on all innovations early in the innovation process.
  • Write and file technical and memo reports in a timely manner.
  • Understand and ensure communication with non-OC contacts is covered under NDA when applicable.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • 3+ years of operations/manufacturing technology experience or equivalent.
  • Experience/knowledge with statistical design of experiments.
  • Proficient in CAD (AutoCAD, Solidworks or similar).
  • Self-starter who works with minimal supervision that balances multiple assignments; works effectively across technology, marketing, and production groups to ensure project success.
  • Ability to multi-task and coordinate several projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to travel up to 20% of the time to domestic and international facilities. Travel schedule is typically set in advance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • 3-5 years of operations/manufacturing technology experience or equivalent.
  • Experience with high temperature, high speed rotating equipment.
  • Working knowledge of fluid dynamics and modeling.
  • Woking knowledge of alloys and metal processing.
  • Experience/training in failure mode and root cause analysis.
