SUMMARY

The IT Portfolio Director is responsible for establishing, implementing, and maintaining an enterprise IT Portfolio Management program to ensure that IT projects and programs are planned forand delivered according to business demands and priorities. The IT Portfolio Director will provide the vision and leadership necessary to plan and execute strategic programs and tactical projects. This role collaborates with IT and business leaders to properly charter and fund IT execution and ongoing support, balancing internal and external resources as needed.

This position requires a visionary leader with sound knowledge of IT project / portfolio management practices and business management practices. This role helps define project management processes for the organization, including work intake processes, application of enterprise architecture principles, and delivery via both traditional and agile methodologies as appropriate.

The ideal candidate is a thought leader, a consensus builder, and an integrator of people and processes. While the IT Portfolio Director is the leader of the IT Portfolio, she or he must also be able to coordinate disparate business drivers, constraints, and personalities, while maintaining objectivity and a strong understanding that portfolio management is a supporting function of IT and the business.

  • Drives business and IT leadership alignment on investments and initiatives to achieve the organization's goals and objectives
  • Optimizes the balance of internal team capacity with external resources to maximize the value and benefits from projects and programs within the portfolio
  • Acts as the primary resource for project steering committees and project sponsors for communications, and for reporting the status and performance of portfolio initiatives

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Guide business and IT functions to create IT roadmaps and associated business cases to drive short and long-term IT investment. Create internal and external visibility to the progress being made along those roadmaps.
  • As a member of the IT Leadership Team, facilitate and coordinate efforts toward the establishment of an IT project portfolio, its structure, and the processes supporting it.
    This includes:
    • Demand management and strategic alignment of projects and programs
    • Portfolio categories and criteria
    • Analysis, selection, and prioritization of projects and initiatives
    • Coordination of project resourcing and funding
    • Impact analysis and identification of cross-functional dependencies
    • Backlog and release management for agile teams
    • Execution, tracking and measuring the achieved results
  • Conduct quarterly business reviews with line of business leadership to provide an assessment of the project portfolio and execute change and reprioritization as necessary to meet business needs.
  • Ensure that regular meetings are conducted with project stakeholders and sponsors, informing them of issues with the performance of individual projects within the portfolio. Confirm that the use of resources and funding is on plan and highlight any variances.
  • Lead reviews of any significant initiatives, projects or programs that have run into challenges. Provide recommendations as to whether they should be continued, changed significantly, placed on hold, or discontinued.
  • Ensure and balance the availability of the required skills and competencies across project and program teams within the project portfolio.
  • Direct the development and maintenance of communications and reporting about the project portfolio and the performance of individual initiatives to stakeholders, sponsors, steering committees, and senior executives.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Directly manage IT Program and Project Managers, providing leadership, coaching and direction, and ensuring they have the processes, tools and work environment to be engaged, productive and effective
  • Onboard and oversee external Project Managers to ensure successful integration
  • Provide mentoring and guidance to a team of Service Delivery Managers reporting directly into various IT functions to ensure consistency of processes and tooling

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Information Systems, Business or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 10+ years of project and program management experience with application development, infrastructure, and other IT projects
  • Employment history must demonstrate increasing levels of responsibility
  • Experience in managing a team and multiple concurrent projects
  • Experience working with both traditional and agile methodologies
  • Must be a self-starter and highly organized
  • Experience with ecommerce, CRM and ERP systems
  • Experience in the software and/or distribution industry a plus

Certificates, License & Registrations

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
  • Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) certification
  • Agile project management experience

  • Exceptional leadership skills, with the ability to develop and communicate the portfolio objectives, inspire and motivate staff, and maintain alignment with business and IT strategy
  • A high degree of political sensitivity, astuteness and the ability to use influence to overcome obstacles and achieve portfolio success
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain and communicate the value of portfolio goals and objectives to the business and to technical leadership
  • A high level of empathy and the ability to vary styles of interaction to match the needs of a variety of business and technical audiences, as well as temperaments and personalities
  • Influencing and negotiation experience and skills in an environment with high competition for resources
  • Familiarity with the use of reporting tools to monitor portfolio activities and analyze portfolio performance
  • Ability to develop portfolios and deliver them against financial and resource constraints
  • Experience with the delivery methodologies and frameworks of:
    • PMI standards (PMP Certification)
    • Agile / Scrum (CSM Certification)
    • Agile / Kanban (KMP Certification)
  • Experience across a range of IT projects and programs
  • Understanding of current and emerging technologies and how organizations make investments to drive business transformation
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative and consensus driven environment and comfortable with ambiguity and change in a fast-paced environment.

  • Must be willing to travel to remote facilities up to 10% of the time on an as-needed basis

Salary may vary depending on factors such as confirmed job-related skills, experience, and location.

However, the pay range for this position is as follows.

$126,200.00 - $234,400.00
