Cardiac Sonographer Student

The Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer Student works under direct supervision to obtain hand's-on clinical training and experience, achieving the knowledge and techniques necessary to perform Echocardiography. The student learns and operates various types of imaging machines, participates in didactic lessons, and proactively obtains learning opportunities. Students will be routinely evaluated with continuous feedback and direction. Must be willing to commit to NCH for the duration of 16 months for classroom and clinical education component. Following completion of certificate, employee must commit to Full-Time employment at NCH Heart Center for 2 years.

Responsibilities

* Performs a minimum of 100 transthoracic echocardiograms within the initial 16-months of the program according to the requirements set by the Nationwide Children's Echo Lab protocols with direct supervision.
* Maintains effective learning and training attitude in course work and clinical work. Utilizes learning opportunities that continually improve knowledge base and technical skills.
* Obtains a basic understanding of congenital heart disease, cath lab interventions, surgical repairs, and complications which lead to the acquisition of high quality and diagnostic images. Performs EKG's, applies Heart Monitors, and performs Exercise Stress Testing.
* Generates the ability to complete preliminary reports in reporting system. Recognizes significant structures, artifacts, pathology, and equipment limitations.
* Attends and participates in Echo conferences, staff meetings and Echo Quality Improvement meetings.

Qualifications

Education Requirement:
* Bachelor's degree in an applied science or Associates degree in a healthcare related field.
* Completion of (or incorporate concurrently with other coursework) prerequisite coursework with a grade C or above in: Anatomy and Physiology, Communication (English, Speech, Composition Course), or Physics (preferred by not required).
* Upon completion of the classwork and clinical experiences, the student will be prepared to apply for and actively pursue achieving registration in Adult Echocardiography by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI). Achieve passing scores on the ARDMS Sonographic Physics & Instrumentation (SPI) Examination (taken at the end of Autumn Semester) and the ARDMS RDCS Adult Echocardiography (AE) Examination (taken at the end of 2nd Spring Semester).
* Must be actively registered in Pediatric Echocardiography by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) within two years of initial adult registry date.
* Completes the following coursework though Central Ohio Technical College: o Echo Techniques Scan Lab; Survey of Echo; Fetal Echocardiography; Sonographic Physics & Instrumentation I and II; Echocardiography I and II; Pediatric Echocardiography and Lab.

Licensure Requirement: Valid Ohio driver's license and proof of auto insurance as required by hospital policy. Must pass motor vehicle background inspection, insurance eligibility, driving qualifications, and training set forth by Nationwide Children's Hospital and maintain qualification of insurance guidelines.

Certifications: Certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation must be maintained.

Experience:
* Must have been employed by Nationwide Children's Hospital (NCH) for a minimum of 1 year and in good standing with current manager.
* Must have completed 8 hours of shadow experience(s) with a registered Sonographer currently employed by (NCH).
* Must be eligible for Tuition Reimbursement through NCH.
