POSITION OBJECTIVE

The objective of the project is to achieve the grand challenge of creating the vagus nerve connectome. The appointee will perform advanced image analysis on vagus nerve images. This will include the creation of new algorithms for analysis using machine/deep learning. The appointee will create comprehensive software for automated analysis with potential manual editing. The applicant must have previous experience on at least a moderately large software project. The applicant should be well-versed in proper software design/documentation. The applicant must have experience directing student assistants. The applicant must have demonstrated the ability to write papers. The applicant must be able to contribute to future grant applications.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Create new methods for analyzing image data, develop software, lead others in the development of software, and use methods to report findings and gain new insights in the image data. (25%)
  2. Assess the feasibility and soundness of proposed tests, products and equipment when necessary data are insufficient or confirmation by testing is advisable. (15%)
  3. Perform as a staff advisor and consultant to the REVA project team. (10%)
  4. Play a key role in the acquisition of research funding; participate in strategy sessions (understand the state of the art and needs); identify sources of new contract funding; and participate/direct the preparation of proposals and presentations. (15%)
  5. Maintain positive relationships with major vendors, and sources of external research and development contract funding. (10%)
  6. Review schedules, cost and documentation to ensure success of projects. (10%)
  7. Create reports to sponsors and prepare manuscripts for publication. Serve as an influential resource to CWRU and its customers for problem resolution, meeting client/ customer needs, and for identifying research opportunities. (10%)

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Of course, this is a research-heavy position that by definition requires flexibility to get the job done. Hence, there may be other duties that arise. Perform other duties as they arise. (5%)

CONTACTS.

Department: Frequent contact with biomedical engineering department staff. Regular contact with program faculty to maintain workflow.

University: Regular contact with Faculty outside of Biomedical Engineering to solicit new projects and manage existing projects. Inform other department staff, professors, vendors, University Departments, grant agencies, and students. Obtain approvals as needed from other department staff, professors, vendors, University departments, and grant agencies.

External: Interact with other research institutions and Universities involved in related device and histological research to establish a network for future engagement.

Students: Interact with biomedical engineering and medical school students periodically.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

Supervise students and staff working on the project with relatively little input from program faculty.

QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum requirement is a PhD in Biomedical Engineering or a similar discipline with 5 years of experience in software and machine/deep learning.

  9. Knowledge of specialized technical procedures, equipment and assessments.

  11. Must possess advanced analytical skills, file management and basic study design.
  12. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within MRI imaging and radiology
  13. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and customers face to face.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The employee will work in a general laboratory environment that may include some exposure to hazards, including hazardous chemicals. The employee must be able to work at a computer for long stretches of time. Occasional travel may be required.
