Job Title: Packaging Engineer

Location: Dayton, Ohio

Job Summary:

The packaging engineer role is responsible for overseeing activities through Trimble's fulfillment centers related to supplier, internal and customer packaging. This engineer will consult with suppliers and business units to develop and test effective packaging designs that are functional, cost-effective, comply with all regulations, and fit a project's brief. Additionally, this role will be the champion of implementing sustainable packaging solutions and reducing incoming freight to drive Trimble's sustainability goals and meet current and future packaging regulations.

What a Packaging Engineer Does:

Packaging Design Consultation- Work with internal teams to evaluate packaging requirements, assist in solving packaging related issues, and persuade towards SKU reduction. Develop packaging concepts in coordination with the finalized products or materials so that the packaging is compatible.

Review Design Efficiency- Evaluate the efficiency of packaging designs todrive long term material and transportation cost improvements. Activities include assessing freight costs, coordinating with product suppliers, and qualifications of new material suppliers.

Conduct Packaging Research- Incorporate consumer and industry research into designs and recommendations. This requires keeping up-to-date on the latest trends, pricing architectures, and compliance regulations.

Labeling Specifications- Coordinate with business units and external customers on labeling specifications for product identification, shipping, and hazardous materials compliance.

Develop Packaging Specifications- Prepare and revise documentation according to engineering protocols and regulations to ensure that the manufacturing specifications are compliant. Communicate updates to the engineering community.

Provide Technical Support-Integrate packaging product initiatives to the production floor, including equipment and materials improvements.Work closely with teams involved in the implementation processes of product packaging, helping them with any technical guidance and support they may need.

What skills and experience you should bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering or related discipline
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of related experience preferred, but will accept internship experience
  • Ability to be a creative problem-solver who can overcome a design's potential obstacles
  • Great communication skills
  • Ability to work well as part of a team
  • Ability to spot potential pitfalls in a design

Works on projects/matters of defined scope with product engineering and marketing teams. This job typically occurs during regular business hours, although some additional time may be required to meet project deadlines. Travel limited (0-5%)
