Under the direction of the Fire Program Coordinator, the Fire Instructional Assistant conducts instruction following the Department of Emergency Services guidelines at Stark State College, the State of Ohio Administrative Code (OAC), and the Ohio Department of Public Safety (ODPS) as it relates to firefighter training.  This position is responsible  to review and deliver quality instruction and support for student success.  The Fire Instructional Assistant participates in program planning, implementation, and evaluation.  The individual in this position is required to maintain appropriate certifications for firefighter training and must adhere to all rules, policies and procedures of Stark State College and ODPS.

  • Demonstrate a thorough and accurate knowledge to the ODPS Firefighter II certification level.
  • Learn and use technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience when appropriate.
  • Employ appropriate teaching and learning strategies to communicate subject matter to students.
  • Prepare for class by reviewing topics as provided by Fire Program Coordinator, incorporating ODPS curriculum objectives into lesson plans.
  • Facilitate discussion in classroom and practical training sessions.
  • Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to student needs and circumstances.
  • Solicit feedback from students through instructor evaluations.
  • Report student progress to the Fire Program Coordinator.
  • With the Program Director and other instructors, review, revise, and update program policies and procedures as needed.
  • Maintain vehicles, tools, and equipment in good working order.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current Ohio Department of Public Safety Firefighter II Certification
  • Current Ohio Department of Public Safety at least to the Assistant Fire Instructor Certification
    1. Must attain Ohio Department of Public Safety Fire Instructor Certification within one year of hire.

Ability to develop and use multimedia software. Ability to coach, mentor, and guide students toward their goals.  Ability to work with a diverse student population.
