Job Summary

The Liquid Color Technology Chemist is responsible for developing new and supporting existing sustainable liquid dispersion color products to meet customers' requirements for use in thermoplastics servicing primarily the building & construction and food & beverage packaging industries for the ColorMatrix business team.

This position is critical to delivering upon the Technology strategies of balancing short-term product customization with long-term product development & process improvement to meet the business needs of today and while securing future growth.

A successful candidate will achieve effective cross-functional collaboration by providing liquid color technical support to sales, marketing, manufacturing, operations, and quality where appropriate to help drive profitable growth and mitigate risk. Provides project management to product platform development including application of statistical experimental design, product testing, and data analysis.

The ideal candidate will serve as Subject Matter Expert as regards liquid dispersion formulation by applying his or her knowledge of physical, mechanical and analytical testing techniques to evaluate in-process and finished good materials, characterize competitive materials, expand understanding of structure-property-performance relationships, and develop/validate new test procedures to support product development, quality, and technical service.

Essential Functions

  • Works in a safe and responsible manner by implementing and following standards.
  • Provides product development, project management, and business support while being a technical liaison to customers by demonstrating the value our products & services delivered.
  • Serves as a Liquid Color technical SME across businesses.
  • Uses focused development tools, such as DOE, to accelerate the product development cycle.
  • Provides guidance and technical direction to the Liquid Color Design team to develop new and modify existing formulations without compromising performance properties.
  • Conducts performance testing such as failure analysis, weatherability, compatibility, and stability.
  • Develops application data in support of sales and marketing.
  • Researches competitive landscape and provides information on relevant competitive benchmarks.
  • Provides training to sales personnel, agents, and customers on the function, application, and value proposition of our product technologies.
  • Collaborates with Commercial team to develop strong relationships with key and target customers by defining critical customer requirements and developing sustainable solutions accordingly.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams to commercialize new products and supports the business by identifying opportunities for growth.
  • Provides technical support to sales, manufacturing, and external customers via needs and feasibility assessment, product recommendations and application guidance.
  • Partners with manufacturing resources to establish quality and testing conditions for new materials.
  • Presents technical work to customers and various levels of management as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science (or advanced degree) in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymers or equivalent required.
  • 5+ years' experience in dispersion chemistries and/or polymer colorant technologies strongly preferred.

Additional Qualifications

  • Expertise in liquid oil-based dispersion product formulation and manufacturing processes related to specialty chemical color and/or additives.
  • Experience in the chemical/physical means of optimizing dispersion stability, rheological properties to ensure fitness of use, and means of characterization.
  • Knowledge of the properties and processing of thermoplastic polymers such as PET, PVC, PE, PP, PS considered a plus.
  • Working knowledge of analytical/physical testing techniques.
  • Demonstrated track record of successful product development.
  • Ability to travel (as needed) to support the evaluations and commercialization of new products.
  • Ability to manage and advance several projects simultaneously to maximize business impact.
  • Exceptional proficiency with Microsoft Office including PowerPoint and Excel.
