About the Role

Responsible for operation and proficient understanding of packaging machinery including palletizers, strapping machines, wrapping machines, forklifts, and overall flow of production. Operation of production machines involves performing short-cycle, repetitive, and control operations of equipment, while maintaining set patterns of products to attain high-quality output that meets or exceeds customer expectations.

  • Maintains standard production objectives through proper machine operation and accurately records production. Communicates production information at shift change.
  • Knows and practices safe and proper start-up and shut-down procedures for each machine.
  • Performs minor adjustments to machinery involving hand movements and simple hand tools to ensure smooth, continued machine operation.
  • Has authority to stop machines/production to communicate machine problems and breakdowns to Production Coordinator or Maintenance.
  • Inspects product for quality defects. Has authority to stop production due to quality issues, including raw materials.
  • Maintains housekeeping of all assigned areas. This includes applying Good Manufacturing Practices to meet plant goals. Reports daily on Master Cleaning Schedule.
  • Forklift operator certified and when assigned to forklift operation a) perform daily safety and operational checks and, b) operate forklift in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Move finished product with a forklift from the production area by a) unloading, moving and storing incoming materials and, b) checking identification, reporting shortages or damaged materials, storing stacking and arranging material for first in /first out usage.
  • Reporting daily production scrap in computer program.
  • Ability to read, write and understand English.
  • Actively participates in Quality training and Good Manufacturing Practice meetings to assist in continuous improvement of plant operations.
  • Follows all established safety rules and guidelines as outlined in the Employee Handbook and as trained during the various safety-related training programs. Understands and communicates all hazards and safety issues to co-workers and managers/supervisors. Properly uses all personal protective equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as directed by the Production Coordinators and/or Management.

  • Able to stand and walk up to 11-hours on concrete or other hard surfaces.
  • Occasionally required to push / pull 70 lbs.
  • Occasionally required to lift/carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Occasionally required to push / pull up to 900 lbs using a hydraulic hand jack (equivalent of a static push/pull of approximately 70 lbs.)
  • Frequently required to squat / bend / kneel / reach in order to carry out the essential functions of the position.
  • Proficient hand / eye coordination to operate equipment and controls.
  • Must be able to climb stairs / ladders
  • Able to lift / reach overhead with a 7lb top frame to place on bulk pallet configuration.
  • Frequently able to reach across palletizer bed 54" to 60" to straighten / pick up fallen product with use of production tools.

About You

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Some post-secondary education preferred (i.e., Technical or Vocational education;).
  • Previous work experience in a manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Able to pass forklift skills test
  • Ability to recognize and understand numbers and values and accurate data entry of the information into an on-line database. A strong mathematical ability is essential.
  • Ability to visually distinguish fine variations in color and other product defects.
  • Ability to visually and mentally make priority decisions and independent judgment calls based on the situation at hand.
  • Ability to efficiently and effectively use a computer and related software.
  • Ability to work all shifts and required overtime.
