CAS is a revenue-generating division of the American Chemical Society, contributing approximately 2/3 of the net contribution made to the Society through its Publications and CAS Divisions. The Content Operations Division encompasses ~520 U.S. employees with global partnerships of approximately 1350 people.
Core to the organization, Content Operations builds content to populate the CAS information databases through acquisition and selection of relevant documents, thorough analysis, abstracting, and indexing of those documents, and the collection and editing of other information such as bibliographic citations, abstracts, and index entries. Content Operations staff members embrace advancements in chemistry, building their subject matter expertise to maintain the world's largest collection of molecular substances, reactions, and related content. In addition, Content Operations staff provide scientific and content knowledge and capabilities for Product Management, CAS Services and Data, Analytics and Insights Divisions.
Position Summary
The role is also responsible for start-up and operationalizing a Knowledge Management new function in Content Operation (CO): Knowledge Management, communications, and change management.
Knowledge Management champions a culture conducive to learning, knowledge-creation and sharing, collaboration, outcome-driven performance culture within the organization and with partners. This group defines and executes strategy and tactics for learning and knowledge management of scientific domains and other strategic priorities for CO.
Communications and change management champions a culture of transparency and change agility within CO. This group’s work includes initiatives and projects involving change management aspects of the transformation of the process and technology, and people impacts.
Knowledge Management, Communications, and Change Management are critical aspects of the highly complex CO transformation focused on building technology and modernizing the CO Division’s processes and technology with heavy focus on people and culture, too. The Phoenix transformation has high impact outside of CO, touching every Division across CAS.
The role reports directly to the VP, Content Operations and Chief Scientific Officer with a dotted line to the Assistant Director, Organizational Effectiveness for OCM accountabilities. The role also aligns closely with Human Resource Business Partner and Senior Director, Human Resources.
Position Accountabilities
- Leads transformational organizational change management for CO Division:
- Leads change aspects of high-complexity strategic transformation of the CO Division’s processes, policies, practices, tools, and technologies in collaboration with transformation leadership, core and extended teams, external consulting firms, Human Resources, and across CAS Divisions impacted by change. Guides and / or executes OCM activities for highly complex transformation to ensure faster adoption and utilization of the change including driving to sustainment of change long-term.
- Drives stakeholder engagement across highly diverse audiences including leadership alignment, learning/training, change communications, organizational readiness, deployment, sustainment, and adoption measurements.
- Utilizes best practices and in tandem with CO leadership and Human Resources. Influences adoption of best practice methodologies and fosters a culture of change agility. Enhances change capability across the Content Operations organization. Embeds skills, changes mindsets, and enhances culture of change agility.
- Defines, measures, and tracks key performance indicators and metrics in partnership with CO leadership and key stakeholders.
- Collaborates and aligns with OCM CoE to integrate CO transformation impacts into enterprise change portfolio using CoE standards and tools. Utilizes enterprise change methodologies, approaches, and tools.
- Establishes and leads strategic internal communications for CO for CO Division in conjunction with senior leadership team.
- Creates and executes strategic communications roadmap for division-led strategic initiatives with impacts across all of CAS.
- Guides successful communication of organizational initiatives and projects to diverse stakeholder audiences. Develops and oversees execution of communications plans.
- Plans, writes, edits, and creates content for a variety of internal communications mediums, such as intranet, newsletters, email, posters, or other visual mediums. Creates messages, scripts, and presentations for senior executives and other leaders to present to employees in written or spoken forums.
- Aligns internal communications messages are consistent across all mediums. Ensures various and complex audiences are consistent with other internal communications and external communication messages and branding guidelines.
- Solicits and responds to feedback from staff and adjust communications content accordingly.
- Establishes and leads knowledge management for scientific domain knowledge and other strategic priorities for CO. In collaboration with CO leadership team and key stakeholders, oversees knowledge management areas below.
- Launches and oversees organization and implementation of knowledge management principles, governance, processes, policies, practices, tools, and technologies.
- Identifies needs; develops strategies, processes, and methods that contribute to building and enhancing knowledge, skills and abilities across all levels of the unit.
- Directs multiple learning and performance-support projects and implements learning agendas across CO. Oversees training and learning curriculum, programs, and resources for scientific and other relevant topics for the unit.
- Enhances and continuously improves effective, efficient knowledge sharing among colleagues.
- Plans, launches, and maintains comprehensive content library and resources to support scientific learning and capability advancement needed.
- Creates and oversees relational databases of skills and knowledge including, but not limited to, all 80 areas of chemistry and ~50 languages; education and training; internal training; and other germane topics. All database information must comply with applicable laws and policies with close partnership with HR.
- Manages and continuously improves knowledge and skills related to content tool development, education, and use.
- Facilitates effective knowledge transfer of complex scientific information, processes, tools, resources, content curation policies and practices. Devises and oversees framework, processes, tools, and resources that accelerates effective transfer of complex and/or scientific knowledge and information among colleagues.
- Manages learning and knowledge technologies, provides education, resources, and communication to optimize use of available technologies.
- Defines, measures, and tracks key performance indicators and metrics for knowledge management in partnership with CO leadership and key stakeholders.
- Aligns change, communications, and knowledge management strategies, roadmap, and processes with other Divisions. Serves as primary strategic point of contact with Organizational Effectiveness teams. Ensures a communication bridge with the HR Division. Collaborates with other CAS Divisions, external consulting firms/resources, and various ACS internal teams. Ensures alignment across applicable Divisions.
- Models collaborative leadership and ensures alignment across diverse stakeholders. Develop trusted relationships with senior leadership and other influential individuals within the organization Establishes and safeguards partnership and alignment across diverse groups in support of transformation and normal operations of Content Operations Division with optimized and aligned processes, practices, policies, tools, technologies, and culture.

Minimum Education/Experience/Competencies/Technological Knowledge
- Bachelor’s Degree in related fields. Chemistry or science degree beneficial, but not required.
- 12 or more years of experience in communications, change management, learning and development, organizational development, or other relevant background.
- Builder of very strong relationships. Quickly achieves trusted advisor status with new partnerships.
- Proven ability to lead complex projects and work across the organization and among leadership, functional areas/Divisions, and levels.
- Strong communication, organizational savvy, interpersonal skills
- Leadership of highly complex organizational change management including experience on complex transformation projects. Must be Prosci® certified and highly experienced in use of methodology and tools.
