Description

The Department of Communication at Denison University invites applications for a full time, two-year Visiting Assistant Professor position in Media Studies with an emphasis on critical and cultural approaches to the study of digital transformations in television, broadcast media and the broader screen ecology. Specifically, we are interested in a candidate whose teaching and research takes a critical approach to the increasingly diverse and changing nature of screen cultures and culture industries in an era when proliferating networked devices and streaming platforms. An ideal candidate's teaching and research will demonstrate awareness of media technologies (including but not limited to digital media) with a critical approach to examining ethical, political, and governmental influences on power and justice in the mediated realm.

Qualifications

We seek a teacher-scholar whose background prepares them to offer a range of courses

which may include Media Structures, Media Ethics, Media Theory, Racialized Perspectives on the Media, Mediating Gender and Sexuality, and Communication Law as well as other similar courses that align with the candidate's expertise. We will prioritize candidates who evidence a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring students and who demonstrate prior experience in teaching media-related courses. We also value candidates who demonstrate interest in contributing to the Journalism major and other interdisciplinary programs such as International Studies, Black Studies, and Women and Gender Studies. The teaching load is six courses of approximately 24 students each per year. The appointment begins August 2024. Candidates are required to have by start date a Ph.D., preferably in Communication. Prior teaching experience in Media Studies is ideal.
