Job Description

The Research Associate 1 participates in planning, designing, execution, and managing research projects occurring simultaneously investigating the molecular and cellular biology of cancer, specifically gastrointestinal cancers using in vitro and mouse models in a foundational (basic) biological/health science research laboratory in the Department of the Comprehensive Cancer Center (Dr Zobeida Cruz-Monserrate)

  • Designs and executes complex laboratory experiments

  • Participates in developing and implementing goals and objectives of studies

  • Maintains mouse colony

  • Participates in the development and implementation of new and revised research methodologies and techniques

  • Tests experimental designs, sampling techniques, and analytical methods and make recommendations for utilization

  • Assists in establishment of controls, criteria and research standards

  • Performs critical analysis of literature relevant to research being undertaken

  • Performs basic and advanced molecular and cellular biology techniques including: PCR, tissue culture, DNA/RNA/Protein extraction, and processing tissue for immunotyping

  • Collects, analyzes and interprets research data

  • Maintains accurate, detailed records of experimental data and protocols

  • Conducts critical analysis of research literature related to research being investigated

  • Assists in the preparation of manuscripts, research paper, articles, abstracts and research reports for publication in peer-reviewed journals and for presentation at conferences and workshops

  • Assist in the writing of project reports, articles and other documents

  • Attends and presents at national and international scientific conferences, workshops and seminars

  • Assists principal investigator in the development and preparation of grant proposals to obtain new or renewal of extramural funding in support of research

  • Participates in developing and managing grant budgets and grant project reports

  • Coordinates laboratory activities and work assignments of postdoctoral researchers, graduate and undergraduate students, and laboratory research staff

  • Oversees and coordinates periodic maintenance and testing of laboratory equipment

  • Monitors laboratory expenses

  • Ensures compliance with protocol requirements, as well as local, state and federal regulations

  • Monitors and enforces laboratory safety procedures to ensure compliance

  • Participates in oversight of daily laboratory operations

  • Trains and/or supervises other lab staff

  • Performs additional duties as assigned

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in an appropriate biological / health science field, or equivalent experience required. Master's Degree preferred.

  • 1-3 years of relevant experience required. 3-5 years of relevant experience preferred.

  • Ability to translate, adapt and apply academic and/or practical knowledge in the conduct of biological/health science research is required.

  • Experience in a biological/health science research capacity is preferred.

  • Experience with animal models and managing a mouse colony is preferred.

  • Requires successful completion of a background check; qualified candidates may be asked to complete a pre-employment physical, including a drug screen.

Targeted Salary Range:

$42,700 - $56,900

By the start of employment, all newly hired employees must receive at least the first dose of a two-dose series or a single dose of a one-dose series COVID-19 vaccination. Individuals who choose a two-dose series vaccination must receive the second dose within 45 days of their start date. Proof of vaccination will be required at time of hire.
